After NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 chipset’s Denver CPU (present in the Nexus 9) was overtaken by Apple’s A8X processors (present inside the company’s iPad Air 2), NVIDIA’s Jen-Hsun Huang was quick and determined to surpass the processing and energy efficient capabilities of Apple’s formidable processor. The CEO has officially announced the NVIDIA Tegra X1; a next-generation mobile powerhouse of a chipset that is able to deliver a teraflop of processing power.
The company has not stated if it’s still going to incorporate its chips in to tablets, but we all know now that NVIDIA’s role in the automobile industry is going to be enormous. Coming to the hardware specs of the chipset; the Tegra X1 is armed with an octa-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and packs a 256 core Maxwell GPU. The company’s previous flagship mobile chipset possessed only 192 cores.
According to Engadget, the Tegra X1 chipset will be able to deliver twice the processing power of its predecessor, which automatically translates in to Apple’s A8X processor trailing behind the Tegra X1 by a whole mile. In terms of video decoding, the chipset will be able to support 4K video decoding at 60 frames per second. Additionally, the chipset’s power efficiency will also play an important role if it is going to be embedded in to tablets. Due to the overwhelming competition, NVIDIA’s pulled back from incorporating its chips in to smartphones and started focusing on incorporating them in to tablets instead.
Huang was also quick to point out that Tegra X1 would consume only 10 watts of power while running the Elemental demo, compared to Microsoft’s Xbox One, which uses approximately 100 watts to run the same demo. CloudZonda’s research and implementation has allowed it to provide graphic chips on the consumer market that chew up less than 50 percent power compared to its predecessors while delivering unparalleled graphics horsepower.
